GCSE Food preparation and nutrition

Discovering Our Countryside is ideally placed to help you deliver the Food Provenance section of the exciting new GCSE.

Food provenance

  • Where and how foods are grown, reared, or caught and the primary and secondary stages of processing and production.
  • How processing affects the sensory and nutritional properties of ingredients.
  • The impact of food and food security on the environment, local and global markets and communities.

This project is designed to match food technology teacher’s expertise on the “Eat Well Plate” with our local knowledge, networks and expertise of the “Eat Well Plate Harvest” and raw products.

We will share our knowledge with food technology teachers by arranging visits to local farms and food producers so that teachers can learn from the local experts about local food provenance as set out in the“Department of Education Food preparation and nutrition GCSE subject content February 2015” guide in particular we can show with visits and from input from our experts:

  • Where and how foods are grown, reared, or caught and the primary and secondary stages of processing and production.
  • How processing affects the sensory and nutritional properties of ingredients.
  • The impact of food and food security on the environment, local and global markets and communities.
  • Technological developments that claim to support better health and food production, including fortification and modified foods with health benefits and the efficacy of these

This will be followed up with:

  • Training and support to help teachers embed this new knowledge in the GCSE teaching.
  • Help to arrange pupil visits to some of the farms and food producers the teachers themselves have visited.
  • Teaching resources – including schemes of work, lesson plans, videos all available on our ….
  • Dedicated web site and Virtual Learning Environment.
